Julie Taymor’s critically acclaimed production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM is beautifully captured on film. Taymor, the brilliant mind behind the Broadway classics, THE LION KING and TITUS, takes Shakespeare’s saga of two lovers and modernizes it with her signature
transcendent style and vision.

Premiering at TIFF 2015, this immersive and darkly poetic cinematic experience brings the play's iconic fairies, spells and hallucinatory lovers to life, dripping with Taymor's trademark creativity. Filmed at her sold-out stage production with cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto (Argo, Frida) and music by Academy Award-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal, the feats of visual imagination are ingenious and plentiful, but beating at the center of the film is an emotionally riveting take on the deeper, more human aspects of Shakespeare's beloved age old tale.

Julie Taymor restages, reinterprets, and reinvents this age old tale, making it relevant again for today’s modern audience without compromising so much as an inch of the integrity of Shakespeare’s original tale.

Adam Feldman, of Time Out New York, said “FIVE STARS. Visionary director Julie Taymor is a thrilling painter of theater…she sprinkles each scene with creative fairy dust. You’d be hard pressed to find a production that rivals Taymor’s for beauty.”

“[A] tremendous, magical new show. .. Pulling out every last theatrical trick — puppets, projections, shadows, acrobatics, dance and, yes, flying — Taymor reminds us why she’s been hailed as a stage innovator for the past 25 years… Every minute brings new surprising ravishments, starting with the jaw-dropping opening scene.”

New York Post

“The director who redefined spectacle on Broadway… has now given New York a Midsummer Night’s Dream that doesn’t so much reach for the heavens as roll around in them, with joyous but calculated abandon… For Ms. Taymor, the sky is not the limit. It’s a supple canvas to be stretched and bent to the whims of the imagination. Her eye-popping take on the canon’s most enchanted comedy… confirms Ms. Taymor’s reputation as the cosmic P. T. Barnum of contemporary stagecraft… This Dream exists… as a glittering necklace of breathtaking moments... [and] when the moments are this beautiful, they take root in your mind and assume lives of their own. Don’t be surprised when they start showing up in your own dreams. The ingeniously mixed music of Elliot Goldenthal ranges from anxious jazz riffs to sustained, ethereal lullabies.”
